if you wonder

how you will navigate

today’s many converging crises

you have come to the right place!

Years ago, while struggling to get a joint lock to work during a martial arts class, my training partner offered this insight: Like any technique, a joint lock only works if applied from a position where we have balance and leverage. If the danger zone created by an attack takes those away, no amount of determination or power will make the technique work. Before we worry about technique, we must move to a safe place—however small and fleeting—where we can recover our balance and leverage. If the danger zone moves and shifts, we must move to the next safe place, and the next, and the next... until we regain enough balance and leverage to apply a technique and neutralize the attack.

I think this lesson — to feel out danger zones and move to the next safe place — applies beyond the realm of martial arts.

I use this website to help people make sense of the many converging crises that define the 21st century, and to respond to them with thoughtfulness, compassion, and dignity. I explore framings like the multicrisis, permacrisis, polycrisis, and metacrisis. I elevate systems thinking, situational awareness, critical reflection, and cognitive autonomy.

This website also serves as a learning hub, attracting people from around the world who are ready to ask big questions, explore root causes, and sit with predicaments that lack obvious solutions. I host a variety of virtual events, from focused discussions to longer courses.
